The light of the world.

Today, we go back to the beginning of 1 John to uncover another profound truth: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

Scripture: 1 John 1:5–7 (NIV)

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”— 1 John 1:5–7 (NIV)

We often say things like, “I’m walking in love” or “I’m living right.” But what does it really mean to walk in the light? What is this “light” God calls us into?

Light is not just goodness, kindness, or having a positive vibe. Light is the very nature of God’s presence—truth, holiness, wisdom, and purity. To walk in the light means to walk in alignment with His character and will. That means confronting the sin, shame, habits, and hidden motives that still lurk in darkness.

Galatians 5 outlines the war between the flesh and the Spirit. Romans 12 urges us to renew our minds and throw off everything that hinders and entangles us. This battle between light and dark didn’t start with us—it began with Satan’s rebellion. He has always tried to pull humanity out of the light and into deception.

Ephesians 2:2 (NIV) describes him as “the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.”

And 1 Peter 5:8 warns us that “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Darkness is the way of the enemy—don’t be like him. We cannot say we belong to God while living in the same patterns of pride, deceit, bitterness, or compromise that mark the enemy's kingdom.

This is why perspective matters. Jesus said in Matthew 6:22–23 (NIV):

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

In other words, what you see—your perspective, your values, your knowledge, and your understanding—shapes whether you walk in light or stumble in darkness.

Application:If we believe the Word of God is the ultimate truth, then we are obligated not just to read it, but to study it, meditate on it, and live it. Walking in light is not optional for believers; it is our calling. It is walking in wisdom, in knowledge, in love, and in holiness.

Jesus didn’t come to cancel God’s commands. He came to fulfill them and then gave us a new command: “Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12)

Prayer:Lord, help me not to merely say I’m walking in the light but to truly seek Your ways. Purify my heart. Renew my mind. Teach me to value what You value. Let Your Word be the lamp to my feet and the light to my path. Amen.
